Julia Elizabeth Tolbert, untitled (mid 20th century)
Ordination at Pytho
Three days oppressed with unclear visions,
my hands grew black with brittle dirt,
extending throatless moans and barefoot
on the earth where flocks refuse to feed.
I hoped to not bring peace, but a sword.
Women fell on themselves, frail angels
sworn to keep their feet from evil, from
the ceaseless wanting and the ceaseless want.
I draped oil on my body like a shroud.
I waited for love and none came.
