James Bogdany’s Still Life (c. 17th century)

single glove

with my necrotic spirit

swimming up the river like

sourwood salmon, doomed i

slipped into the safety deposit

vault, stared at the nested

jewelry there

i am shrubbery

useful, protective, pruned, shorn

quarterly and occasionally

pissed on

listen—we can't all have

glazed donuts for

faces

can't all be fair

jawed, money

mocking

some of us still do

cry when we lose

even just one

single glove

Diamond

Jack said

there is nothing in the universe

like diamond

I said

I want nothing in the universe

but diamond

There’s always

a first time, once

and only

Then you get used to it

You get used to it
